If this is the first time you've heard of this shot, you may be thinking "what in the world is a duck fart shot"?? That's the name of this drink? Yes! It's actually a really delicious drink. Once you're finished laughing at the name, this layered drink will quickly become one of your faves!

It's very similar to the b-52 shot except instead o f grand marnier, you use whiskey.

The taste of this duck fart shot is like a creamy coffee drink, think of like a creamy espresso martini. It's smooth and rich like my chocolate cake shots but has more coffee flavor. To make it, simply pour coffee liqueur into the bottom of your shot glass, then pour Bailey's Irish cream on top of the kahlua, then add Whisky on top of the bailey's.

There's something about the mixture of Irish cream and Kahlua that gives this shot such a decadent flavor. It's absolutely delicious and will quickly become your favorite shot!

Why is it called a duck fart shot?

Good question! Legend has it that this shot was created on a peanut farm in Alaska, hence the full name being "Alaskan Duck Fart Shot". However, there's another origin story that states it was made on a slow night at the world-famous red dog saloon and an older woman named it a "duck fart" drink because it gave her gas.

Whichever rendition of the story you want to go with works for me. What I do know if that this is a really fun drink and once you layer the ingredients and see everything come together, it's really impressive to serve.

Ingredients

ingredients to make a duck fart shot - kahlua coffee liqueur, baileys irish cream, and whiskey.

Coffee Liqueur - I used Kahlua but you can use whatever brand you'd like.

Irish Cream - the bailey’s floats on top of the Kahlua to create the middle layer.

Whiskey - traditionally Crown Royal, a Canadian Whiskey, is used but you can use whatever brand of whisky you like.

How to make a Duck Fart Shot

a hand grabbing a duck fart shot.
  • The bottom layer is kahlua, so start by pouring 1 ounce into the bottom of your shot glass.
  • Then slowly pour the middle layer - 1 ounce of Irish cream over the back of a spoon to create the layered effect.
  • Lastly, add good amount of whiskey. Same method as the middle layer - simply pour it over the back of a spoon into the shot glass and enjoy!

No cocktail shaker needed for this duck fart drink, just a kitchen spoon or bar spoon and a shot glass!

Tips

  • This recipe makes a single shot so if you're serving a crowd, you'll have to make each shot one by one.
  • You'll need a 3 oz shot glass for this recipe. If you only have 1.5 oz glasses, use a ½ ounce of each ingredient.
  • To ensure you get the distinct layers in this cocktail shot, you can do the spoon method - place the back of a spoon into the shot glass and pour the ingredients onto the back of the spoon. Layer ingredients very slowly so that they don't mix.

It was a lot of fun to make this shot. I enjoyed reading about how it got it's name. It's also really smooth shot, if you like coffee, you'll love this. Gonna try your espresso martini next.
