Who doesn’t love a good cocktail? These are the margaritas you want on your table. They’re refreshing and perfect for Spring and Summer. Love a good sangria but there’s nothing like a tasty and bright margarita. Especially a margarita that has grapefruit. I can’t wait to make these for Cinco De Mayo, Taco Tuesday, and for my upcoming cookouts at the house once the weather warms up.

The tequila and grapefruit give these drink a nice punch of flavor. The slight tang and sweetness for the grapefruit juice paired with the earthy tones of the tequila, they really go so well in this margarita. I also added a nice splash of pomegranate juice for a really nice balance. This step is totally optional but highly recommended!

ingredients to make grapefruit margaritas - limes, grapefruit, tequila, triple sec, and a shaker cup

ingredients

The ingredients are pretty similar to a paloma, with the addition of Cointreau, or triple sec. You can also use grand marnier – whatever you like!

  • Tequila – I used a white tequila, Jose Cuervo Silver Tequila also works too!
  • Sparking Pink Grapefruit Juice – it doesn’t have to be sparkling, but I enjoy the bubbles!
  • Orange Liqueur – Cointreau and Grand Marnier are my faves, but use any brand that you like!
  • Lime Juice – freshly squeezed is best but if you’re short on time, store bought lime juice works too! For a fresh press, I used this citrus juicer.
  • Pomegranate Juice – for sweetness and tang
  • Agave Nectar or Simple Syrup – both are optional, but if you like sweet drinks, definitely add agave nectar or simple syrup.
  • Mint leaves and Pomegranate Arils – for garnish

how to make grapefruit margaritas

  • Add some sweetness to your glasses! Coat the rim of the glass with agave nectar or rub a lime along the rim. Then dip into sugar to ensure the entire rim is coated.

  • Get out your cocktail shaker! Add tequila, triple sec, and lime juice to a cocktail shaker or a glass. Add in agave nectar, to taste (I added in a teaspoon) and shake. Pour into a glass.

  • Top off margaritas with grapefruit juice and a splash of pomegranate juice. Then, garnish with mint leaves, leftover grapefruit, limes, and pomegranate arils. Taste for sweetness! If you’d like to add a little sweetener, add agave nectar or simple syrup at this step and stir together.

Grapefruit margaritas for a crowd

To make a pitcher of these grapefruit margaritas, it’s super easy and very much a crowd pleaser. You can double, triple, or even quadruple it for a party, get together, or simply to save for a later date! I highly recommend taking this to your Cinco De Mayo parties or Summer cookouts, it’ll be a hit!

tips and substitutions

  • Use simple syrup to make these sweeter. Traditional margarita recipes calls for simple syrup, but I omitted it from this grapefruit margarita recipe because I love the taste of the fruit on their own and the splash of pomegranate sweetens it enough for me! However, if you don’t have it, simple syrup or even agave nectar work just fine!
  • Mocktail version: make these margaritas without alcohol, omit the tequila and triple sec and add orange juice in its place. You can also add a splash of sparkling lemon soda to give it some fizz!
  • You can make these grapefruit margaritas healthier by using a low calorie grapefruit juice or simple using freshly squeezed juice. Not only is fresh squeezed juice better in flavor but it’s also better for you because it’s not processed.
  • To prevent the grapefruit margs from getting watered down, freeze the glass for about 20 minutes prior to using. This will keep your drink cold without having to use ice and water down the drinks!

Made these tonight for a Friday drink, I really liked the pomegranate in it. I made some for me and some for my husband and we are dancing and happy now. Really great margaritas!
