What is a Bahama Mama?

The Bahama Mama is a classic tiki-style cocktail. Tiki drinks include light or dark rum (sometimes both), flavored syrup like grenadine, and fruit juices. This vacation drink was made popular in the Bahamas in the 1950s.

Bahama Mama Ingredients

  • Coconut Rum: If you want that tropical flavor, you can't skip this. It adds that coconut flavoring that makes you feel like you're right on the beach. Because they range in sweetness and alcohol amount, pick your favorite.
  • Dark Rum: Aged and full of flavor, this slightly spicy addition balances out the sweetness of some of the other Bahama Mama Ingredients.
  • Grenadine: A splash of this pomegranate-based syrup results in a beautiful rosy tint and sweetness.
  • Pineapple Juice: Use 100% juice for the best results in this Bahama Mama cocktail.
  • Orange Juice: For a nice smooth texture, opt for pulp-free. Fresh is always best!
  • Lemon-Lime Soda: This version includes soda because I love a little fizz in my beverages. Just a splash!
  • Garnish: A pineapple wedge and a maraschino cherry are the perfect additions to your Bahama Mama.

How to Make a Bahama Mama

Firstly, fill a tall glass with ice. Then add coconut rum, dark rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, grenadine, and lemon-lime soda.

Finally, add ice and garnish with a pineapple wedge and maraschino cherries.

  • Classic: The original recipe for Bahama Mamas are made with coffee liqueur. It may seem off but the combination really works! Coffee adds roasted notes and brings more dimension to this tropical punch.
  • Mocktail: A non-alcoholic option is great for parties. Simply leave out the rum to make this a virgin Bahama Mama. Then add simple syrup and more juice or soda, to replace it.
  • Layered: Make the beverage even more irresistible by making it a gradient that resembles the perfect sunset. The grenadine should go in the bottom of the glass. Then mix the other liquids before adding them to the cup. It's that simple to make this cool ombre effect!

I can't drink enough rum punches when I'm on vacation so it's odd I'd never made them at home until now. Your version was mouth-watering good - I'm going to mix up another batch next weekend!

My new favorite cocktail! I had a similar drink at a water park resort a while back and have been trying to replicate it ever since. This recipe is spot on and exactly what I was looking for. So fruity and full of flavor! I only had coconut rum but next time I make it I am going to use both the coconut and the dark rum. Thank you for an amazing recipe!
