What is Avocado Crema?
Traditional Mexican Crema is an avocado cream sauce made with ripe avocados, sour cream or Greek yogurt, lime juice, garlic, cilantro, and spices. It has everything you love about guacamole with the added richness of Mexican crema.
Avocado Crema Ingredients

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
- Ripe avocados – Use ripe avocados because they’re buttery smooth. The darker the avocado, the better. They are easier to blend for that velvety smooth texture and yield the best flavor.
- Sour cream or Full-Fat Greek yogurt – Either works for this recipe. I prefer sour cream but if you use Greek yogurt, ensure it’s plain so you get the correct flavor.
- Fresh lime juice – Squeeze fresh limes for citrus flavor to complement the avocado. A little lime juice makes this such a flavorful sauce!
- Fresh Garlic clove – Fresh minced garlic adds a savory depth to the sauce that will have you scooping it by the spoonful. If you don’t have any garlic, you can use about 1 tsp of garlic powder.
- Chopped fresh cilantro – Although optional, this adds a fresh, herbaceous element to my avocado crema. Use leftovers to make my cheesy mexican chicken and rice with Mexican street corn dip on the side!
- Seasoning – Add ground cumin for a little smoky flavor and kosher salt to enhance the overall flavor.
Substitutions
Make It Spicy: For a kick of heat, add diced jalapenos or serrano peppers, chili flakes, or cayenne pepper.
Vegan/Dairy Free: Swap the sour cream or Greek yogurt for a vegan yogurt or coconut cream to keep this recipe dairy-free.
Swap the Citrus: Once, when I was out of limes, I used fresh lemon juice instead. It works as a great substitute. The taste is slightly different but still tangy and refreshing.
How to Make Avocado Crema

Step 1: Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a blender or food processor.

Step 2: Add the sour cream (or Greek yogurt), fresh lime juice, minced garlic, and cilantro, cumin, and kosher salt. Blend the mixture until smooth and creamy. If the mixture is too thick, you can add a little more lime juice, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach the desired consistency.
- Taste for salt and add as desired. Blend again briefly to combine.
Pro Tips
- Blend until completely smooth. For the best texture, blend the mixture thoroughly, ensuring no chunks of avocado remain.
- Taste and season as you go. After blending, taste the crema and adjust the salt or lime juice to suit your preference.
- Use Fresh Ingredients!
- Make your crema a day in advance for more flavor. This gives the ingredients time to mingle in the fridge so the taste can develop.
How to Serve Avocado Crema

This creamy condiment is such a simple sauce but can be used in so many different ways! My favorite ways to enjoy it are as:
- Dip: Tired of ketchup? Use crema as a dipping sauce tortilla chips or fries, like these Elotes Fries or Crab Stuffed Shrimp!
- Sauce: Drizzle this zesty sauce over Cheese quesadillas, Shrimp Fajitas, Pulled Pork Nachos, Fish Tacos, breakfast burritos, and rice bowls.
- Salad Dressing: Upgrade your salad using this as a dressing. I especially love it with my House Salad recipe and Strawberry Spinach Salad.
- Spread: I LOVE using this sauce on my ribeye steak sandwich or Cheesy Gordita Crunch Tacos!
FAQ
Drizzle a thin layer of olive oil on top before storing. This creates a barrier that helps prevent air from reaching the avocado. Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the crema to minimize air contact to prevent the browning process. Keep the crema in an airtight container to reduce its exposure to air. Store in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. Give it a good shake before serving.
Yes, you can freeze avocado crema. Place it in an airtight container or a freezer-safe bag, leaving a little room for expansion. It will keep for up to 2 months, but be sure to thaw it in the refrigerator and give it a good stir before using, as the texture may change slightly.
If the mixture is too thick, you can achieve a thinner consistency by adding more lime juice, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach the desired consistency. You can also use a little water if you prefer less tanginess.
Both use avocados as a base, but they differ in texture and ingredients. Avocado crema is smooth and creamy, made with sour cream or Greek yogurt, lime juice, garlic, and sometimes cilantro. It has a rich and tangy flavor. However, guacamole is chunkier, often includes diced tomatoes, onions, and jalapeños, and focuses more on the fresh flavors of avocado with a hint of lime and salt.
