Crispy Oven Baked Cajun BBQ Wings sounds like a mouthful but it is super easy to make! When it comes to cajun BBQ recipes, this is quick, simple, and tasty. Most people prefer fried chicken but if you want less mess and calories, baked chicken is the way to go!
Don't fret! You can still have that savory crunch with baked chicken wings and I'll prove it. With the super bowl coming up, you won't be able to stop reaching for these spicy, saucy wings!
During Prep: If you want crispy baked chicken wings, ensure the wings are completely dry before baking. Dry them REALLY well using paper towels to blot away any moisture. This makes it so that the seasonings adhere to the wings but also makes it so that the skin becomes super crispy in the oven!
While Baking: Use a cooling rack during the baking process. This allows air to circulate which results in crunchy oven-baked chicken. With the wings slightly elevated from the pan, they will cook more quickly and evenly.
Another way to make sure your chicken wings are crispy is to flip the wings midway through baking, for an even, crispy coating.
Cajun seasoning is a regional spice blend most commonly associated with Louisiana. For this wings recipe, I used a premixed Cajun seasoning but it is super easy to make your own with spices already in your cupboards. Cajun seasoning is a simple mixture of:
If you want it to be all-in-one, you can add salt to the mixture. You can alter the amount of each ingredient depending on your taste buds or even include more spices like onion powder and thyme. The blend can keep for up to a year if stored properly.
This versatile rub can be used on chicken, seafood, burgers, and more. Get creative!
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Then pat each chicken wing dry with a paper towel and add to a large bowl. Next, add salt and cajun seasoning. Toss together to ensure all wings are coated.
Use a baking sheet with a cooling rack and place each wing on the cooling rack. Drizzle olive oil on top and bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Flip the wings and place back in the oven for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the skin becomes crispy.
Add wings to a large bowl and add your favorite bbq sauce. (I used Sweet Baby Ray's Original.) Finally, toss together until all wings are evenly coated.
Chicken wings pair well with just about anything but here are some of my favorite sides to enjoy them with:
