What's in pumpkin pie spice?

Put down that premade pumpkin spice mix at the grocery store because we can make it at home. Chances are, you already have all of the ingredients for Homemade Pumpkin Spice sitting right in your cupboards. This staple flavor of the season consists of:

  • cinnamon: the star of the show that gives this pumpkin pie blend it's base flavor
  • ground ginger: for a little spiced flavor, count on ground ginger to bring it!
  • allspice: popular for both savory and sweet dishes, allspice bumps up the flavor of this spice blend and gives it a sharp yet fresh flavor.
  • nutmeg: if you can buy whole nutmeg and blend it into the pumpkin pie spice, it's so much fresher as opposed to the pre-ground nutmeg. However, use what you have!
  • cardamom: this is my little secret. You won't find cardamom in a lot of pumpkin pie spices, however, I added it here because it adds so much flavor. It's that je ne sais quoi that we all love!
  • ground cloves: you can't a pumpkin spice recipe without cloves! This strong but tiny spice is powerful and adds a nice punch of flavor to this recipe.
