Top Tips for Making this Delicious Dunkaroo Snack

  • Make sure your mixing bowl is large enough. Don’t underestimate the size of the bowl you need for this recipe - the bigger, the better! You don’t want to accidentally spill your cake mix everywhere.
  • Try using a hand mixer or stand mixer for this recipe. It will cut down on the time it takes to make this recipe. It will also make your dip more fluffy and smooth and creamy. You could also use a spatula to mix all of your ingredients.
  • Fold your sprinkles using a spatula to stop the dip from turning a different color. Depending on the type of sprinkles that you use, your dip could turn the dye! That could be a fun variation too for a cool tie dye effect!
  • Lastly, make sure your Cool Whip is thawed before you start! It will be tough to mix if you use semi-frozen Cool Whip!
ingredients to make dunkaroo dip - cool whip, heavy cream, vanilla extract, funfetti cake mix, funfetti vanilla frosting, and rainbow sprinkles.

Ingredients List

Funfetti Cake Mix - You can use any funfetti cake mix that you want; this is what gives the dip the delicious dunkaroo flavor. Funfetti cake mix is so versatile! Be sure to try out my Funfetti Cupcakes!

Cool Whip - I prefer the extra creamy cool whip, but if you cannot find it, regular will work just as well. Make sure that your cool whip is thawed before mixing. (Try using extra creamy cool whip for a super rich dip!)

Vanilla Yogurt or Vanilla Frosting - I prefer to use vanilla yogurt (not vanilla greek yogurt) or vanilla frosting! If you only have plain yogurt on hand, adding a few drops of vanilla extract will do the trick.

Sprinkles - You can use any color sprinkles that you’d like. Opt for rainbow sprinkles if you want the feel of the original Dunkaroo icing. Keep in mind the cake mix already contains rainbow sprinkles, but I love to add more!

Substitutions

  • If you can't find funfetti cake mix, you can also use white cake mix.
  • Try using cream cheese if you do not have any frosting or yogurt. You may need to add a little milk or heavy cream to thin out the mixture a bit.
  • For a gluten-free option, use gluten free funfetti cake mix.

How to Make Dunkaroo Dip:

This is one of the easiest dips I have ever made, but it is also one of the most delicious! Here's how to make this easy dessert dip:

Heat treat the cake mix

Start by heat treating the cake mix to get rid of any harmful bacteria. Microwave the cake mix in 30-second increments 1-2 times or bake in the oven at 350 degrees F for 5 minutes. For the oven option, spread the mix onto a baking sheet and bake. It may become a bit melty, this is OK.

Mix ingredients together

Then mix together the box of funfetti cake mix, icing or yogurt, vanilla extract, and cool whip in a large mixing bowl. I recommend mixing with an electric mixer for best results, but a large spoon works too!

Then fold in your favorite sprinkles.

Chill in the refrigerator

Cover the mix with plastic wrap / cling wrap and let it chill in the refrigerator for around 30 minutes.

Last but not least, your dip is ready to serve! Spoon mixture into your favorite serving dish and top with extra sprinkles. Feel free to get creative and add more toppings if you'd like! I recommend trying chocolate chips or mixing the dip in with ice cream.

FAQs

Do I have to heat treat the raw flour?

If you're concerned about harmful bacteria from the raw flour, you can absolutely heat treat the cake mix. Simply preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and spread the box of cake mix onto a baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes and you'll be ready to make your cake mix dip in no time! Of note, the mix may become a bit melty/sticky. Use your best judgment.

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

Of course! This dip can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Cover it with plastic wrap or throw it into an airtight container before putting it in the refrigerator. You can even put small amounts in a container in your kid’s (and your) lunches!

Can I freeze this dip?

You can! Be sure to store it in an airtight container, which can stay in your freezer for up to 3 months! When you’re ready to use it, let it thaw overnight in the fridge, and then serve! Do not microwave it!

Is there a specific type of sprinkles to use?

This is 100% up to you! You could use rainbow sprinkles or even solid color sprinkles. I’ve used only pink before when I brought this to a baby shower! It was a hit! Remember that the Funfetti dip will already have some rainbow sprinkles in the mix, but you could always use vanilla cake mix too.

Why is my dip multi-colored?

It may be because you put the sprinkles in while mixing. I recommend leaving the sprinkles out until the end. Once you’re done creating the base of your dip, I would add the sprinkles. Make sure to fold them in with a spatula - not a hand mixer!
