What is turtle pie?

Turtle pie is a dessert pie that is a spin on the classic turtle candies. It's essentially the candy in creamy pie form. Turtle candies are made from chocolate, pecans, and caramel, the toppings that traditionally go on top of the pie.

It first came about as a specialty pie in fine dining restaurants, then Edwards Desserts and Marie Callenders began making frozen versions to sell in grocery stores. This recipe is more akin to a copycat version of the edwards turtle pie.

Ingredients

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

  • Oreo Cookies
  • Melted Butter
  • Softened Cream Cheese - use room temperature cream cheese to ensure that the filling is nice and smooth.
  • Powdered Sugar - powdered sugar helps the filling to set and gives structure to the pie.
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Cool Whip - to make the filling super fluffy!
  • Salted Caramel Sauce - this is what give the filling its delicious flavor.

Toppings

  • Whipped Cream -  you can use store bought or make homemade whipped cream (my fave).
  • Chocolate Syrup - I used store bought chocolate syrup to save time. However, you can use melted chocolate for a more decadent chocolate drizzle.
  • Salted Caramel Topping - feel free to make your own or buy pre-made salted caramel.
  • Chopped Pecans - for more crunch, use candied pecans!
  • Chocolate Chips (optional)

Substitutions

  • No oreo cookies? No problem! Use graham crackers instead and make a graham cracker crust.
  • If you don't have any cool whip, you can use heavy cream. Simply beat 1 cup of heavy cream until stiff peaks form and fold into th cream cheese mixture.
  • Gluten Free - use gluten free oreo cookies for the crust. The filling is gluten free.
  • Vegan - use vegan cream cheese and vegan caramel, butter, and cool whip in the exact quantities listed in the recipe card.

Tips

  • Use a springform pan as opposed to a pie pan. I've tested this recipe multiple times and the oreo crust sets better in a springform pan than in a pie pan. It's also easier to cut!
  • Refrigerate up until you're ready to serve. This dish is best served cold.
  • Use cooled caramel as opposed to hot caramel to prevent the filling from melting.

How to make Turtle Pie (+Video)

  1. Make the pie crust. Add oreo cookies to a food processor and blend until smooth fine crumbs form. Slowly pour in butter and continue to blend until mixture resembles wet sand. Add oreo crumbs to a springform pan and press against the bottom and the sides of the pan. Place in the refrigerator to set.
  2. Make the filling. Combine softened cream cheese and powdered sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on medium low speed for 1-2 minutes and gradually increase to medium speed until smooth. Add vanilla extract and drizzle in salted caramel. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and continue to mix for another minutes.
  3. Fold in cool whip with a rubber spatula until smooth and incorporated. Pour into the creamy caramel filling into the oreo cookie crust. Place in the refrigerator for a minimum of 4 hours, optimally overnight.
  4. When you're ready to serve, make whipped cream topping. Beat cold heavy whipping cream in a mixing bowl and add powdered sugar. Beat until stiff peaks form.
  5. Drizzle caramel and chocolate sauce on top of the pie. Then, pipe whipped cream on top. Sprinkle with chopped pecans.
