Ever since the baby is born, we've had Sesame street on blast. I sometimes wake up and I've got the cookie monster song stuck in my head. "C is for Cookie, that's good enough for me", c'mon sing along! lol

What flavor is Cookie Monster Ice Cream?

The blue color makes most people wonder what Cookie Monster Ice Cream tastes like. Mint, perhaps? Nope! The hue comes from a flavorless food coloring and is just a nod to the Cookie Monster.

The flavor of the ice cream comes mainly from the cookie pieces, heavy whipping cream, and sweetened condensed milk.

So the flavor of this homemade Cookie Monster Ice Cream is rich, vanilla-based cookies and cream.

ingredients to make cookie monster ice cream - heavy whipping cream, chocolate chip cookies, oreo cookies, chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and blue food coloring.

Ingredients

I love this creamy ice cream recipe because it only requires a few simple ingredients and no ice cream machine is needed!

  • Heavy cream: Make sure it's extra cold before mixing. It should be straight from the fridge.
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Blue gel food coloring: Used to create the bold bright blue color this dessert is best known for.
  • Can of sweetened condensed milk: The base of the vanilla flavor.
  • Cookies: I used Oreos and Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookies and chopped them up. You can use whatever brand or variety you prefer. However, make sure the cookies are extra crunchy so they stand up well against the creaminess of the ice cream.
  • Chocolate chips: For extra chocolatey yumminess!

No Churn Ice Cream

Cookie Monster Ice Cream does not require an ice cream maker! All you need is an electric mixer or a whisk. This quick and easy method for making ice cream is so simple, that kids can help out!

How to Make Cookie Monster Ice Cream

  • Add cookies to a ziploc bag and smash them with a dough roller. You can also use your hands to crunch them together into small pieces.
  • Make whipped cream. Add heavy whipping cream to the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment or a large bowl and beat with an electric hand mixer until stiff peaks form, about 3-5 minutes. Then add vanilla extract and blue food coloring and mix together until the cream is completely blue.
  • Fold in sweetened condensed milk, then add chocolate chip cookies, oreo cookies / chocolate sandwich cookies, and chocolate chips to the ice cream mixture. Add more chopped cookies to the top of the ice cream.
  • Add to a freezer-safe container and cover with plastic wrap or a lid. Freeze for 6 hours.

Pro tip: top with cookie dough pieces, crunchy cookies, or hot fudge for a decadent dessert! It's one of the best things ever!

Tips for making No-Churn Cookie Monster Ice Cream

  • Whip the heavy cream until frothy peaks form. This makes your ice cream super creamy and light.
  • If you don't have an ice cream storage container, you can use a loaf pan. Simply line with parchment paper and cover with plastic wrap and place in the freezer. Airtight containers are best as it'll last longer, but this ice cream is so good, it'll be gone before you know it.

Variations

This is the perfect ice cream to experiment and get creative with. There are so many delicious mixing options. Just have fun with it!

  • Edible chocolate chip cookie dough: Throw some in to add a tasty twist.
  • Instead of doing half Oreos and half chocolate chips, you can stick to one.
  • Alternatively, you can try other types of cookies or cookie combinations!
  • Add other toppings and mix-ins like nuts, sprinkles, marshmallows or marshmallow fluff, or Reese's cups.
  • Turn this into an ice cream sandwich by scooping the ice cream between two of your favorite cookies. Smoosh together and enjoy.

Substitutions

  • To make this gluten free, use your favorite gluten free chocolate chip cookies and gluten free chocolate sandwich cookies.
  • For a vegan / dairy free version, swap out heavy cream for coconut cream and swap out sweetened condensed cream for sweetened condensed coconut milk. Oreos are already vegan so just use your favorite vegan chocolate chip cookies.

Leftovers

Keep leftover Cookie Monster Ice Cream stored in the freezer-safe airtight container you initially stored it in. The ice cream will stay fresh in the freezer for up to 2 months. If kept longer than that, the ice cream may begin to crystalize.

Be sure to store the ice cream towards the back of the freezer instead of the front of the freezer door. Every time you open the freezer, warm air comes in. So to prevent that warm air from reaching your ice cream, store it as far back as possible.
