Ingredients Needed

- Hot Cocoa Mix provides instant chocolate flavor and sweetness, giving the dip its classic hot chocolate taste without needing additional cocoa powder or sugar.
- Heavy Cream adds richness and creates a smooth, creamy, scoopable texture while helping all the ingredients blend evenly. I prefer using heavy cream over whipped toppings like cool whip for that rich, creamy dip flavor – but it works in a crunch!
- Marshmallow Fluff adds sweetness and a light, fluffy texture, delivering that signature marshmallow hot cocoa flavor. You can also use marshmallow creme here.
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips are melted in the microwave to create the base of the dip. It provides additional chocolate flavor, making the dip richer and more indulgent.
- Vanilla Extract smooths everything out and adds warmth, creating a more balanced and creamy hot chocolate flavor.
Substitutions
- For a less sweet dip, use dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet. You can also swap out the hot cocoa packets for unsweetened cocoa powder instead (about 3-4 tbsp depending on your personal preference).
- If you don’t have marshmallow fluff, you can also use marshmallow creme or cool whip instead. Also, if using cool whip, leave out the heavy cream.
How To Make Hot Cocoa Dip

Step 1: Mix together semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1/2 cup heavy cream in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave until melted, then stir in hot chocolate mix (you can also use cocoa powder here for a less sweet dip).

Step 2: In a separate large bowl, mix together remaining heavy cream, marshmallow fluff, vanilla extract, and a tiny pinch of salt. Use an electric hand mixer to beat until stiff peaks form.

Step 3: Fold the whipped cream mixture into the chocolate mixture and mix until combined and smooth. For best results, chill for 30 minutes to allow it to firm up a bit (recommended but not mandatory, you can serve immediately).

Step 4: Add to a serving bowl. Top with chocolate shavings, crushed candy canes, or mini marshmallows. Serve with your favorite dippers – animal crackers, graham crackers, apple slices, vanilla wafers or even shortbread cookies!
How To Serve
Whenever I make this hot cocoa dip, I love to serve it with buttery shortbread cookies, fresh fruit, pretzels and graham crackers. Think of this as a dessert charcuterie board!
If you really want to get creative, swirl the dip into some ice cream for a chocolate ice cream/hot chocolate fusion treat!
Recipe FAQs
This dip is typically served chilled. It’s not a warm dip like fondue. Think whipped, spoonable, and cloud-soft rather than melty.
Absolutely! Hot cocoa dip is a great make ahead dessert. Prepare it up to 24 hours in advance, cover tightly, and store in the refrigerator. Let it sit out for 10–15 minutes before serving so it softens slightly.
Totally. Marshmallow fluff adds sweetness and that classic cocoa vibe, but you can leave it out or swap it for whipped topping (like cool whip) or cream cheese for a less sweet, more chocolate-forward dip.
Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator (or cover with plastic wrap). This hot cocoa dip recipe will stay fresh for 3 to 4 days. Give it a quick stir before serving to bring it back to life.
Freezing isn’t recommended. The creamy base can separate and lose its fluffy texture once thawed. This one’s best enjoyed fresh or refrigerated.
