Lately, I've been working on so many different recipes. However, this Chocolate Banana Bread is BY FAR my favorite. This is the best chocolate banana bread I've ever eaten - chocolate or no chocolate. It's amazing.

The bread is super chocolatey, tender and moist, easy to make, and just heaven on a plate. If I could describe this properly, it's like a brownie and traditional banana bread got together and had a baby. The fudgy yet cakey texture with the chocolate chips... as I said, heaven on a plate! Also, It goes PERFECTLY with a cup of coffee. Or by itself. Or with whatever you like - it's just that good.

As I mentioned above, I have been testing so many recipes lately. I've been bursting at the seems with creativity, however, there's nothing like enjoying something simple and easy, this like chocolate banana bread.

What I also love about this chocolate banana bread is that it uses basic pantry items and doesn't require you to buy any special ingredients. I used ripe bananas just as they became spotty and a little cocoa powder and chocolate chips.. also a touch of nutmeg. This combination of ingredients is out of this world!

How do you make chocolate banana bread

I thought you'd never ask! Ok so super simple recipe here. Mash up 4 ripe bananas and add the sugar, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, melted butter, and sour cream. Then add the cocoa powder (I prefer Hershey's cocoa powder, however, use whatever you have!), flour, kosher salt, baking soda, and nutmeg.

Mix it all together and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Sprinkle additional chocolate chips on top! Then bake! Bake for one hour to an hour and 10 minutes. Of note, this recipe requires a 9x5 loaf pan.

Tips on how to make chocolate banana bread

This chocolate banana bread is super easy to make, however, see below for my favorite tips to make this bread everything and more:

  • Use kosher salt as opposed to table salt. The salt grains are larger and dissolve better into the batter. It's also additive free and tastes better. (I use kosher salt exclusively for ALL of my recipes, so I'm biased but it's my favorite. )
  • I avoided using dutch process cocoa powder for this recipe. Because of the pH of dutch process cocoa powder, it would interfere with the other ingredients making it too basic. However, the acidity of traditional cocoa powder with baking soda and sour cream make this chocolate banana bread super moist and tender!
  • Use ripe bananas! Not the kind of bananas that are brown/black, just ripe with a few spots will do. I find when the bananas are too ripe, the bread turns out a bit too sweet and kind of weird. So, just ripe will do!
  • Use a 9x5 loaf pan. Anything smaller, the batter will bake and flow over the pan.

What to eat with chocolate banana bread

Coffee is my favorite! Slicing into this chocolate banana bread heating it up with a little butter.. then sipping my coffee?! SO good.

  • Berries, specifically raspberries and blueberries - they pair exceptionally well with the flavor of this bread
  • Sliced bananas on top!
  • Peanut butter smeared on top is delicious with this too!
  • Like I mentioned earlier, coffee!

You can enjoy the bread by itself too. However you decide to enjoy it, it'll be delicious!

  1. Having company and I was out of ideas for dessert, well I made this quick and fast
It was moist and tasty. The best I have ever made. Needless to say;my guest went home with a few.

Eating this was a little mind bending, but I assure you it was all good. I bit into the first bite with the expectation of brownie like chocolate richness, and instead was delighted by chocolate bananas! How it was so alarming as chocolate banana bread is the name of the recipe I will never know. But as this was my first foray into such territory my brain told me to expect a tried and true chocolate dessert. I followed the recipe in most of the ways but had to make two changes. One is that I used a 9x9 cake pan, because I couldn’t find my loaf pan, and used dark chocolate chips instead of semi sweet chips as I didn’t have any of the later on hand. It baked up beautifully and I cut it up like a cake and enjoyed warm out of the oven. My family loved it as well. I don’t know that it will last until tomorrows breakfast.

    • I'm so happy to hear this! Thank you so much, I'm so glad that you enjoyed this recipe! 🙂

Best chocolate banana bread I’ve ever tasted! Thank you Britney, for sharing your recipe!
I was going to share the other loaf but after I tasted a slice, I decided I’ll freeze the other one fir me fir someday! Haha! So Fudgy. I’ll just reduce the white sugar to 3/4 if I use semi sweet chocolate chips. I used Hershey cocoa like you recommended (left over from chocolate crinkles baking last Christmas!)
Now I can look forward to breakfast snack tomorrow! !
