This isn’t just any easy mug cake, this is a Nutella mug cake. And trust me, the Nutella takes it to a whole new level. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Nutella: The star of the show! Rich, creamy, and full of chocolate-hazelnut goodness.
  • Cocoa Powder: Adds an extra punch of chocolate flavor and makes this taste like a legit dessert. If you don’t have cocoa powder, you can use all purpose flour but it won’t be as chocolatey.
  • Egg: This is what binds everything together and gives the cake that soft, almost gooey texture.

How to Make Three-Ingredient Mug Cake

Alright, let’s break this down with step-by-step instructions:

nutella and an egg in a mug mixed together with a fork.

Step 1: Grab a large, microwave-safe coffee mug. You need space because this cake is going to rise. (tip: if you don’t have a mug, you can use a small bowl) Use a small whisk or a fork to mix together nutella and the egg until fully incorporated, about 1 minute.

Step 2: Mix It All Up: Toss in your cocoa powder and continue to whisk until smooth. No lumps here, we want a silky-smooth cake batter. Pop your mug into the microwave and let it cook for 45 seconds to 1 minute. You’ll know it’s done when the top is set but still a little soft to the touch. It should have a slightly gooey, almost molten lava cake vibe.

Topping Ideas

Here’s the best part about mug cakes—you can go wild with toppings. Want to make it extra? Try these:

  • Ice Cream: A scoop of vanilla ice cream melting over your warm mug cake? Pure heaven. Oh and a little fresh fruit on top seals the deal *chef’s kiss*
  • Extra Nutella: Go ahead and drizzle a little more Nutella on top. You know you want to!
  • Whipped Cream: Because every dessert gets better with a fluffy cloud of whipped cream and a few fresh berries on top.
  • Crushed Oreos: Want to take it up a notch? Throw some crushed Oreos on top for that Oreo mug cake twist.
  • Chocolate chips: chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, even butterscotch chips – all are a great addition.

Feel free to experiment—this microwave cake is like a blank canvas for all your dessert dreams.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t overfill the mug! Fill the mug no more than halfway. The cake will rise as it cooks, and you don’t want it to overflow.
  • Adjust Cooking Time: Microwaves vary in power, so adjust the cooking time accordingly. Start with 45-60 seconds. If the cake is not done, microwave in 10-second intervals. The top should look set but slightly moist to the touch.
  • Mix Ingredients Well: Make sure to whisk your ingredients thoroughly, especially because the cocoa powder or flour can clump up.
  • Use a Wide Mug: A wide, microwave-safe mug (at least 12 ounces) allows the cake to cook evenly. Narrow mugs can lead to uneven cooking, with the center staying raw while the sides overcook.

I made this last night and it came out just perfect. I don’t typically keep nutella in the house but I got some to make this and I’m so glad that I did! I microwaved it for 45 seconds and it was just like a hot fudge cake with the fudge sauce on the bottom. I scooped ice cream on top just like the picture and it was out of this world. 10/10

I made this last night with cocoa powder instead of flour like you mentioned – it was nothing short of bliss. I don’t usually keep nutella in the pantry but I got it just to make this recipe and I’m so glad that I did! I’m going to buy it all of the time now. I’m curious, can I try this with peanut butter too?
