It's officially lunch time and you need to make this sandwich! This club sandwich is my favorite sandwich of all time. It combines a classic club sandwich with flavorful fresh ingredients like buttery avocado, alfalfa sprouts, sliced tomato and lettuce, and a little red onion.

There's also a little cheese, turkey, and layers of crispy bacon which automatically make this sandwich recipe a winner. To top that off, I made a homemade chipotle mayo that truly makes each bite so flavorful and mouthwatering. Enjoy with some chips or french fries and you've got an unforgettable meal that you'll be making on repeat all summer long!

What is a club sandwich?

A California Club sandwich is a delicious and popular variation of the classic club sandwich. It typically consists of layers of deli meat, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and cheese stacked between slices of toasted bread.

The California Club sandwich is typically served as a stacked sandwich, where the layers are assembled in the order listed above. The sandwich is often cut diagonally into halves or quarters for easy handling.

Ingredients

ingredients to make a club sandwich on a white surface - bread, chipotle mayo, tomato, lettuce, avocado, cheese, red onion, turkey, bacon, and alfalfa sprouts.
  • Bread: The sandwich starts with toasted bread slices, commonly white or whole wheat bread. Some variations may use artisanal bread like ciabatta or sourdough.
  • Turkey: Slices of roasted or smoked turkey breast are a staple in a California Club sandwich. The turkey provides a savory and slightly salty flavor.
  • Bacon: Crispy bacon strips add a delightful smoky and salty taste to the sandwich. They provide a contrasting texture to the other ingredients.
  • Avocado: Creamy slices of ripe avocado are a defining feature of a California Club sandwich. They add richness and a buttery taste, and a nice bit of healthy fats to this sandwich.
  • Lettuce: Crisp lettuce leaves, such as iceberg or romaine lettuce, provide a refreshing and crunchy element. They add texture and a subtle freshness to the sandwich.
  • Beefsteak Tomato: Slices of ripe tomatoes contribute juiciness and a mild tang to the sandwich. I recommend using beefsteak tomatoes as they're not as juicy and they're nice and firm. You can also use heirloom tomatoes too.
  • Red Onion: for a nice crunch and added flavor!
  • Cheese: A slice of cheese, typically Swiss or cheddar, is often included in a California Club sandwich. The cheese adds a creamy and slightly tangy note that complements the other ingredients.
  • Alfalfa Sprouts: although not necessary, the sprouts add so much freshness to the sandwich. If you can't find them, no biggie. But if you have some, definitely add it! They're sold at most grocery stores!

Quick Tips

  • Try to have everything cooked prior to assembling the sandwich. It makes putting the sandwich together super easy!
  • Use a fun toothpick to keep the club sandwich together. This sandwich gets pretty tall so you'll need something to hold everything together!
  • Use a serrated knife to cut the sandwich. This prevents it from falling apart and keeps the layers intact!

How to make a Club Sandwich
