Is there anything better than fluffy biscuits, fresh out of the oven with a little butter melted in between those beautiful flaky layers? Well, believe it or not, I say yes! Biscuits in an air fryer!

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my traditional biscuit recipes, however, the air fryer really adds a nice crisp texture to the outside of the biscuits while leaving the inside so moist and tender.

Also, the air fryer cooks them a lot faster and cuts down on preheat and cooking time - which as a Mom and wife, I'm always up for a quick and easy recipe!

This beauties are the perfect biscuits for butter and jam but also soups, breakfast sandwiches (my fave), stews - you name it! All you need are a couple of minutes to make the biscuit dough, pop them in the air fryer basket - et voila, you've or the most delicious fluffy buttermilk biscuits ever.

  • Perfectly golden biscuits every time! The hot circulating air gives these biscuits the most beautiful crisp texture while leaving the inside of the biscuits fluffy and tender!
  • Homemade biscuits in 10 minutes! Cook time is only 10 minutes, you'll have delicious biscuits in no time!
  • Make from scratch or use canned biscuits! If you're in a rush, you can opt to make canned biscuits in the air fryer! I'll show you how to do both at the bottom of the post and in the recipe card.

Ingredients

ingredients to make air fryer biscuits - flour, buttermilk, kosher salt, butter, baking powder, and baking soda.
  • All purpose flour
  • Baking Soda and Baking Powder
  • Kosher Salt - I like busing kosher salt as opposed to iodized salt. The flavor isn't as bitter and
  • Buttermilk - you can't have biscuits without buttermilk. Not only does it add flavor but it also works with baking soda to lift these easy air fryer biscuits sky high while baking! If you don't have any buttermilk, here's how to make buttermilk at home with only two ingredients!
  • Butter - the key to those flaky layers is COLD BUTTER. Pro tip: I like to freeze my butter for 15 minutes prior to using to make sure it doesn't soften while I'm making the dough.

Pro Tips

  • If this is your first time cooking biscuits in an air fryer, do a test bake with 1-2 biscuits before baking an entire batch. Not all air fryers are created equally and cook at different intensities.
  • Bake your biscuits on the same rack in a single layer to ensure that they cook evenly and at the same rate. It is best to cook on the middle rack i you have an oven style air fryer to ensure the biscuit tops don't burn on the heating element.
  • Use cold butter! Take refrigerated butter and place it in the freezer for 15 minutes prior to baking the biscuits. This ensures that the butter doesn't come to room temperature while you're making the dough.
  • If the butter is too cold for you to work into the dry ingredients, an easy way to do this is to add dry ingredients and butter to a food processor and blend until pea sized morsels form. Then pour into a mixing bowl and add buttermilk and proceed with the rest of the recipe instructions.

How to Air Fry Biscuits

  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees degrees F.
  • Mix together the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl - all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and kosher salt. (Image #1)

  • Cut the butter into cubes and add it to the flour mixture. Pinch and turn the butter into the flour together until pea sized morsels form. You can also use a pastry cutter or food processor (Image #2)

  • Pour in cold buttermilk and mix together with a wooden spoon until a shaggy crumbly dough forms. The dough may seem very crumbly, do not add more buttermilk!
  • Remove the biscuit dough from the bowl and turn the dough out onto lightly floured surface. Gently knead until the dough is no longer crumbly. Cut the dough into 4 pieces and place on top of each other. (If you see big chunks of butter, don't worry - this is good!) (Image #3)

  • Use your hands to press the pieces together and then use a rolling pin to flatten dough until it's 1 inch thick.
  • Spray the air fryer baked with cooking spray.
  • Press a 2 ¾ inch round biscuit cutter or cookie cutter into the dough and place individual biscuits onto the basket. Fold any excess dough back together and repeat until all of the biscuit dough is used, about 7 biscuits. (Image #4)

  • Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter. Cook for 9-10 minutes.

Can I use canned biscuit dough?

Of course! Save additional time by using store bought biscuits (my breakfast favorite is Pillsbury Grands Biscuits), just note that cooking times will vary depending on the size of the biscuits.

For smaller biscuits:

  • Spray the cooking basket/rack with oil.
  • Cook at 330 degrees F for 3-5 minutes.
  • Flip the biscuits over and cook for another 2-4 until they are golden brown.

For larger biscuits:

  • Spray the cooking basket/rack with oil.
  • Cook at 330 degrees F for 6-8 minutes.
  • Give the biscuits a quick shake to loosen them from the rack and continue to air fryer for 2-3 minutes, until golden brown.

Of note, store bought biscuits tend to have sugar in the dough which makes the tops caramelize and brown a bit faster. To prevent this, keep an eye on the biscuits and adjust cooking times as needed.

Recipe FAQs

Why are my biscuits raw in the middle?

It's likely that the air fryer runs hotter than the temp reading and cooked the biscuits too fast - making the outside appear done and leaving the inside doughy. If this happens, place the biscuits back into the air fryer for 2-5 minutes and let them finish cooking from the residual heat. (Do not turn the air fryer back on)

Do I need to use parchment paper?

Nope, you don't need parchment paper at all. The biscuits won't stick to the basket and they shouldn't seep much liquid while cooking so parchment paper really isn't needed.

Do I have to use an air fryer?

You can use the oven if you don't have an air fryer! I recommend baking these at 450 degrees for about 12-14 minutes, until the tops of the biscuits are golden brown.

Can I use frozen biscuit dough?

I do not recommend using frozen biscuit dough as it'll cook on the outside and the inside will be raw. Use cold refrigerated dough for best results.
