Philly Cheesesteak Sliders are delicious little sandwiches that pack all the flavor of an authentic Philly Cheesesteak. As a Philly native, I've had my fair share of Philly Cheesesteaks. Delssandro's and Max's were my favorite spots growing up and I still visit whenever I'm in Philly!

This is the best homemade Philly cheesesteak recipe because it's quick, easy, and mouthwatering. Instead of making individual sandwiches, bake everything in one dish for shareable, pull apart deliciousness! Ready in less than 30 minutes, these sliders work as an appetizer or a filling meal!

What is a Philly Cheesesteak?

Philly Cheesesteaks of course originated in the city of Philadelphia. They''re the best steak sandwiches you'll ever have. Traditionally, this sandwich contains thinly sliced steak, peppers, onions, and Cheez Whiz on a hoagie roll.

Cheesesteaks are a gooey, melty blend of juicy ribeye steak and cheese with caramelized onions and peppers on a hard roll. If you ever find yourself in the City of Brotherly Love, this is a staple treat that you do not want to miss!

ingredients to make philly cheesesteak sliders

Philly Cheesesteak Slider Ingredients

This easy to assemble finger food requires just a few simple ingredients - quality meat (ribeye shaved paper thin), American and/or Provolone Cheese, onions, and green pepper (optional).

  • Slider rolls: I use King's Hawaiian savory butter rolls for Philly Cheesesteak Sliders. They're fluffy, bake well, and are precut for easy grabbing. Be sure to use the savory butter rolls as opposed to the sweet rolls!
  • Steak: I used thinly sliced ribeye.
  • Green peppers and onions: These are essential for cheesesteaks. I can't imagine the flavor profile without it!
  • Onion powder: To boost the flavor of the sandwich, use this.
  • Garlic mayo spread: A creamy combo of minced garlic, mayonnaise, and room temperature butter mixed together and slathered on the bottom layer of the rolls prior to baking. This spread is finger-lickin' good!
  • Cheese: The best cheese for Philly cheesesteak is a combination of American and Provolone. I used American cheese to mix in the skillet with the steak then I added slices of Provolone to the rolls while assembling the sliders. However, you can swap out either or both kinds of cheese for mozzarella or Swiss. And if you want to keep true to Philly Cheesesteaks, you can use a jar of Cheez Whiz.
  • Salt and pepper: Added just enough to taste!

What kind of meat is used for Philly Cheesesteak Sliders?

The best meat for a Philly Cheesesteak is ribeye steak because it's perfectly tender and flavorful. However, skirt steak, New York strip steak, ground beef, roast beef, or even Steak-umms will work in a pinch. If you happen to have leftover steak on hand, this recipe is a great way to repurpose it!

How To Make Philly Cheesesteak Sliders

Start by preheating the oven to 400 degrees F.

Then season the steak with salt, pepper, and onion powder. Next, drizzle olive oil in a skillet over medium high heat and cook until browned. Add onions and green peppers and cook until onions are softened and caramelized.

Slice the slider rolls in half and place the bottom layer on the bottom of a parchment lined baking sheet. Then combine minced garlic, mayo, and butter mix together. Add a pinch of salt and pepper. Spread on the bottom and tops of the slider rolls.

Add steak on top of the bottom of the rolls and top with provolone cheese slices. Place the top of the slider rolls on top and slice a little bit of butter on top of the sliders and sprinkle with sesame seeds (optional).

Bake for 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted. Finally, enjoy!

What sides go with Philly Cheesesteak sliders?

If you are preparing these sliders as a meal, you can serve them with french fries, onion rings, tater tots, or sweet potato fries.

Leftovers

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container and refrigerate them for up to 3 days. When you are ready to reheat, wrap the sliders in foil and bake them at 350 degrees F for about 10 minutes.

Want to add more toppings?

I love adding ketchup, hot peppers, banana peppers, and sometimes even mushrooms to mine (depends on how I'm feeling). Feel free to get creative with your toppings or even use different kinds of cheese. These are meant to be enjoyed exactly how you like it!

Tips!

  • If you can't find ribeye, you can use 1 lb of ground beef instead.
  • Ask the butcher at your grocery store to shave the ribeye so that you don't have to cut it yourself. (this ensures it's super thin!)
  • Add Salt and pepper at every stage of cooking to ensure maximum flavor.
  • If you don't have slider bread, turn these into real philly cheesesteaks and use a hoagie roll instead!

Yes I made this tonight but I ended up using ground beef and it was really tasty. I also tweaked this recipe using already baked chicken breasts and using munster cheese but it also was extremely tasty so win win.

Traditionally, a Philly Cheesesteak does NOT have peppers but this recipe was so good! I really enjoyed it.
