How did Miami Vice get its name?

Believe it or not, the Miami Vice drink was not named after the Don Johnson 80s crime drama of the same name. It was actually concocted before the popular series was even in production.

However, it was invented in Miami and combines two of Florida's signature drinks. It's Part strawberry daiquiri and part pina colada. This frozen drink (sometimes referred to as "Lava Flow") gives major Miami vibes!

ingredients needed to make a miami vice - frozen strawberries, white rum, simple syrup, grenadine, frozen pineapples, coconut rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut.

Miami Vice Ingredients

Several recipes use pina colada mix and strawberry daiquiri mix, however, I opted to make my own homemade layers from scratch. Don't fret, it's super easy to do!

Strawberry Layer

  • Frozen strawberries: I used frozen fruit because it results in a thicker mixture. You can use fresh or a mixture of frozen and fresh strawberries if you prefer a thinner consistency.
  • Ice cubes
  • White rum: A light rum like Malibu would be ideal for the Miami Vice Drink.
  • Simple syrup: This sweetens the drink and really complements the strawberries.
  • Fruit Punch: for added fruity flavor that pairs so well with the strawberry flavors.
  • Grenadine: A splash of this bright red pomegranate-based syrup results in a beautiful rosy tint and added sweetness.

Pineapple Layer

  • Frozen pineapples: Frozen diced pineapple is a true time saver! However, you can absolutely use fresh pineapple for these classic drinks!
  • Coconut Rum: I love the extra coconut flavor mixed into the pineapple layer. It kind of tastes like a pina colada!
  • Ice cubes
  • White rum: I opted for white rum as opposed to dark rum for a lighter rum flavor.
  • Cream of coconut: This is the cream that rises to the top of chilled coconut milk. Then it is sweetened with sugar. You can use storebought or easily make homemade cream of coconut instead.
  • Pineapple juice: Tangy pineapple juice really adds to the pina colada flavor.

How to Make a Miami Vice Drink

The beauty of this sweet cocktail is that it looks impressive but it is really so easy to make!

  1. Firstly, blend the strawberry layer until smooth and pour into a large cup/pitcher. Then blend the pineapple layer (separately) with ice and blend until smooth.
  2. Then combine the separate drinks - pour the strawberry daquiri with the frozen pineapple mixture into blended layers in a glass (hurricane glass or tall cocktail glass recommended) in alternating layers. Pouring the layers one at a time creates a swirled appearance kind of like a layered effect.

Finally, garnish with cherries, a lemon wedge, fresh mint, strawberries, or a pineapple wedge. The options are endless with these fun tropical cocktails!

Make a Miami Vice Mocktail

To make this miami vice cocktail alcohol free, simply omit the rum. You'll still get those beautiful distinct layers, you may need to add a bit more pineapple juice for the frozen piña colada / pineapple layer and more fruit punch for the frozen strawberry daiquiri layer when mixing in the blender.

You can also use a smoothie bowl blender if you prefer a thicker consistency.

Enjoy these popular beachy cocktails however you'd like and feel free to get creative and customize to your liking!

FAQs

What is the best rum for the Miami Vice drink?

White rum is best for Miami Vice. The mild flavor of white rum allows all of the fruits to stand out. A dark, spiced rum would overpower the other ingredients and not taste as well balanced.

Can I make a non-alcoholic Miami Vice?

Yes! To make a virgin Miami Vice, simply leave out the rum when preparing the strawberry daiquiri and pina colada. Then it is a tasty treat for kids and adults alike!

Can I make this ahead of time?

You can but I don't recommend it! This recipe has frozen ingredients that will melt. However, if you MUST, I recommend doing so before the party gets started, prepare the mixtures separately and then place them in the fridge. When you are ready to serve, simply pour them into glasses and garnish. Enjoy!
